Abortion and Genetic Disorders: Resources

The following list of websites provides general background as well as specific information related to the ethical question. It is up to you to decide which information to use and how to use it. Remember to evaluate your sources critically and be aware of possible bias. For the purpose of the debate, you want to understand all sides of the argument and research alternative perspectives as much as possible. In this case, you want to read opinionated papers and websites in addition to unbiased sources.

Ancient Art-Sam Koss

Ancient Art

Sam Koss

The Timeline:

Civilization:

Aesthetics:

Architecture:

“For thousands of years, as civilizations waxed and waned, these three art forms- painting, sculpture, and architecture- embodies the ambitions, dreams, and values of their cultures. Although early artists are anonymous, most of what we know about their societies comes from the art they left behind. Ruins of Mesopotamian ziggurats and bas-relief sculpture, as well as Egyptian pyramids, testify to complex civilizations. Greek art reached a pinnacle of beauty as respect for the individual flourished in Athens, and Roman relics attest to the might of the greatest empire in the ancient world.” (Srtickland, The Annotated Mona Lisa, 2007).

The Plan:

Two classes will divide up and research the art of 7 ancient civilizations: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, India, and the Aztec / Maya. We will focus mainly on their works of art, but will need to do some cultural background research, as well, in order to better understand how these people thought and lived so that their art can be seen in a cultural “context”. For example, we may see a carved likeness of a
